Saturday 29 June – Friday 5 July

Saturday 29

  • Dan: went up to town on the bus to hang out with Eli
  • Hugh: Mongolian A&S – made ghee and cultured milk into kefir and yoghurt; worked on documentation
  • Hugh: said something about the Holy Roman Empire not being holy, Roman or an empire, so we had a bit of a discussion about Eastern and Western Roman Empires and the claims to continuing the imperial legacy of Rome in Western Europe by Charlemagne and his successors
  • Hugh: reading Horrible Science: Chemical Chaos, and reading me amusing anecdotes

Sunday 30

  • Dan: discussed feeling a bit blocked on the Youth Ambassador project, so we booked in 8 July (after Hugh’s project is finished) to start working on that together
  • Dan: sent me copies of recent fiction and poetry which I uploaded to the online portfolio
  • Hugh: Mongolian A&S – we tested the two ferments and the yoghurt had spoiled, but the kefir hadn’t cultured at all
  • H&D: made GF ravioli from scratch (making the pasta themselves, making the filling, and working out how to fill them without things falling apart)
  • H&D: lit the fire, split wood and kept the fire burning all day

Monday 1

  • Dan: writing another Les Mis fanfic, but this one is longer and is requiring more dedication to staying motivated; discussed strategies for staying on track and not giving up when one scene just isn’t working
  • Dan: using an online drawing program to draw some Les Mis fan art, and getting frustrated with both it and their choice of subject
  • Hugh: still reading Horrible Science: Chemical Chaos
  • D&H: no youth rapier due to high winds and low planned attendance
  • H&D: lit the fire, split wood and kept the fire burning all day
  • The Kingdom Youth Officer announced a new youth category for A&S entries at the Kingdom and group level, so interested to see more information about that. I suspect Hugh and I are working above that level with our group projects, but as his skillset grows he might want to enter some entirely by himself in future.

Tuesday 2

  • Dan: went up to Headspace walk-in session on the bus with me and we spent the afternoon in Hobart; they spent most of the time on the bus and in the waiting room drawing, but we also went shopping and had lunch before and hot chocolate after the appointment
  • Hugh: swimming lesson
  • Hugh: cooked dinner (vego Massaman curry) with Daddy, as I didn’t get back until 7pm

Wednesday:

  • Dan: singing lesson
  • Hugh: helped with lunch and dinner prep

Thursday 4

  • booked Dan into school holiday creative writing workshop with Tansy (12 Jul)
  • library visit
  • Dan: writing an explainer for the plot of Les Miserables for people who don’t want to have to read The Brick but want more context for the musical
  • both kids had to help with more housework than usual because I’ve hurt my arm: they were both troopers, even though Dan isn’t at 100% either
  • Dan: no roller derby due to not feeling well

Friday 5

  • Hugh: worked on documentation for Mongolian A&S project; I bought more cream to repeat the experiment with boiling down butter
  • we got guinea fowl keets!
  • Dan: online role play and writing fanfic (Les Mis)
