060202 Friday

How did it get to be the second month of 2007 ALREADY? Sheesh…

Today, Miss Kate wanted to paint even before she’d finished having breakfast. Seems like she took me seriously last night when I said that no, we weren’t going to start painting tonight, but we could do it first thing tomorrow (I think I might have to start assuming that she is listening and processing everything I say and to not talk over her head like she won’t understand or remember any more!). So I cleared the table, found the old sheet to go over it, and set her up with her new paint colours, palette and glitter while I put the drying up away. She painted a couple of pages using a brush, then decided that fingerpainting was It and started squelching and smooshing paint everywhere. Yay for tablecloths you can use for wiping her hands with *g* Some paint did get through onto the table, but wiped off without difficulties.

I cleared up that mess just in time for Playschool, then we read books and she pootled about upstairs while I had a shower and got ready to go out to do the supermarket shopping. We discovered that half the carpark at Kippax was blocked off because it was being resurfaced, and there were no parking spots to be found, so I gave up on Aldi and we went to do the whole shop at Coles instead. Managed to get most of it done, but Kate was getting increasingly sleepy and grumpy through the checkout, moving onto a full on screaming tantrum when I actually had the gall to insist that I needed to bring the groceries into the house and go to the toilet before I could put her down for a nap. She’s still asleep now, although presumably not for much longer. In the meantime, I cleaned the living room, then my mum came over to pick up some boxes of paper that she had left in the garage while she and Dad were away. We had a nice chat about various things, including actually being able to talk about Beth’s education without coming to blows (or even getting remotely upset with each other). We have come a long way…

070130 Tuesday

This morning Katy came up to me with an old painting of Beth’s and made it clear that she wanted to paint too. I covered the dining table with an old sheet and let her loose. The sheet idea worked perfectly, I might get another couple of them from Vinnies so we can protect the table without having to worry about protecting the tablecloth! Clearly I didn’t pay attention in chemistry or art class in high school, though, because I put turpentine in a plastic cup to clean old brushes, which meant that we had to spend half an hour in the garden to let the smell of dissolved plastic air out of the kitchen! Fortunately the cup was in the sink at the time, so no harm done (except to my pride).

We fed the bunnies and chickens and put washing on the line. K’s fine motor control is getting much better – she always has to hang undies and small items on her little washing line when I’m putting out laundry, and she can manage to put the pegs on by herself about half the time. She heard Chiv in the garden and trotted up to the side gate to wave goodbye to them as they drove off, which was very sweet.

After we were able to come back inside, she played with the Duplo while I ‘pootered, then we went to watch the recording of this morning’s Playschool episode and discovered that it hadn’t recorded due to lack of disk space. I put on an older episode, then when that was finished, figured out how to edit some of the old shows to cut off all the extraneous Postman Pat crap. I couldn’t find a blank DVD to dub some shows onto, though. K wanted to watch another episode, so I let her do that and did some more ‘pootering and pottering. She took her nappy off again, and did a pee in the fortunately-empty-at-the-time Duplo crate (at least, I presume it was a pee, although she could have just poured some water into it, I guess).

We also played house in her kitchen: she is getting better and better at cutting up her toy food, and is starting to really move into pretend play. She was filling her cup at the sink and drinking it, also cooking at the stove and eating the results (sometimes she shared them with me *g*). We had Playground radio on in the background, and so long as I have another window open on the desktop, she is quite happy to just listen instead of insisting that she has to watch the shiny jukebox thingy the whole time! I have decided that there are worse things than the Wiggles – although I still dislike their TV show I don’t mind their music as much as a couple of pieces of crap on the playlists… One New Year’s not-resolution of mine is that we need to get more music into the house, because it’s practically criminal that someone as musically talented as Katy isn’t being immersed in it all day. I’ve been browsing the ACT Library catalogue and requesting CDs that sound interesting: currently I’m listening to Silk Road Journeys by Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, which is kind of a Western/Mongolian folk/classical fusion. Insofar as I can tell with the tinnily inadequate laptop speakers, it sounds very intriguing.

We played some more in the garden after lunch, but it’s getting too hot to be out there too long. It’s very cool having two sandpits, because even when it’s so hot that the sand in the bigger sandpit burns your feet, we can just go play in the one under the cubby house. Of course, playing under the cubby house inevitably turns Katy’s mind towards playing in the cubby house, so we did that too. Katy discovered halfway up that it is practically impossible to climb a ladder while wearing her Melbourne-Cup hat, so carefully climbed down again and took it off. After I burnt my bum on the slide on the way down I decided it was just too hot out there, so we came in again. Katy is now asleep, and I am procrastinating about deciding what we’re going to have for dinner.

Christmas – What Worked and What Didn’t

What Worked

* keeping all the presents in a central location – I didn’t lose anything! *g*
* wrapping presents as I went.
* shopping for stocking stuffers and hamper fillers, as well as major gifts, throughout the year, especially at op shops.
* recycling decorations – add new decorations in the same colour scheme at post-Christmas sales.
* new pyjamas, stuffed toy per munchkin, and a new family Christmas book and/or puzzle/game on Christmas Eve. Next year wipe their faces before taking photos *g*
* hampers for Beth – keep the food hamper each year and change the major hamper according to her interests.
* taking a couple of hours to open all the presents, with time to have breakfast and to play with loot in between.
* setting the table for breakfast the night before – next time, get Beth to help decorate it to look extra festive.
* hamper for the Sleigh family, as well as individual gifts.

What Didn’t Work

* my budget (ha. ha. ha.). I have no idea how much I spent this year. I didn’t set an amount and stick to it; I didn’t track my spending; I bought too much on impulse. Next year, don’t be such a twit!
* we didn’t send out any Christmas cards because I forgot about them… 🙁
* we forgot about Solstice!
* using different kinds of paper to indicate the gift recipient. Next year just make gift tags!
* panklets for breakfast – insufficient ballast to counteract the blood sugar rush from all that chocolate! Next year, have a big cooked breakfast with lots of protein.

What to try next time

* start holiday baking early in December.
* bake extra biscuits to give to neighbours.
* make an Advent Wreath?
* research more about Solstice celebrations, and start making our own traditions. Have a small present-opening on that day too, to spread out the excitement a bit.
* try the idea of wrapping all our Christmas books and keeping them in a basket, taking out one per night for bedtime reading. If we don’t have enough books for the whole of December, borrow some from the library and open them first! Instead of wasting all that wrapping paper, buy Christmas fabric/s on special and make 24 drawstring bags.
* don’t forget to stock Beth’s Advent calendar with candy canes!
* try online ordering for as many presents as possible, esp. if pregnant/with a new baby.
* don’t forget Christmas ornaments from CAA for each munchkin, to start a collection they can take with them when they move out of home.
* order Christmas cards online nice and early, and write a few per day. Maybe try a Christmas letter, and include a family photo.
* I make up a stocking for E and he makes up one for me.
* the deli at Belconnen Markets (behind Beppe’s restaurant) has individual chocolates eg. insects, teddies etc, for stocking fillers

To be edited as more stuff occurs to me/us.

Spiderlings

Our spider has just laid another clutch of eggs… Deeply freaky! Beth and I decided to write to the Australian Museum team and ask about spider reproduction, because this is just weird…

061205 Tuesday

* keyboard practice: We Wish You A Merry Christmas. She is getting frustrated with trying to learn it from memory, so I found a version in a songbook and wrote in the note names. Unfortunately it is in a different key to the version the keyboard is using, so we talked about transposition. Can’t find the keyboard’s songbook!
* reading: I Wish That I Had Duck Feet – read 20 pages with only 8 fumbles, and only two of them needed me to give her the word
* craft: making a person from pipecleaners
* reading: another 6 pages of IWTIHDF, only 1 mistake
* watched BTN: AWB, Australia Day, swimming. In the segment on Australia Day they had a graphic showing the route taken by the First Fleet. I asked her, “What’s wrong with that map?”, and she was able to tell me that the ships did not go through Bass Strait because at that point they didn’t realise that Tasmania was not attached to mainland Australia. Rawr!
* watched Our History, on the impact of the Snowy Scheme on the townof Adaminaby, which was interesting because we used to have a holiday house at Adaminaby when we were kids so I’ve been to the Lake and seen where Old Adaminaby used to be, etc
* Meredith called me and asked questions about making garb etc, which prompted us to go through the cupboard and find all our spare stuff. B tried on various combinations and so forth.
* watching Buried Alive: Sydney 1788-1792 – a documentary based on documentary evidence from the time eg. journals, diaries and letters, illustrated with contemporary sketches and paintings. B watched about half of it before declaring that it was too boring and turning it off.
* 12:30 swimming with Nannie (and possibly Caitlin), then out to the farm

Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 061205 Tuesday

061204 Monday

* worksheets on long and short a
* pottery
* playdate here with Caitlin from 12:30-5
* picked up E from work on the way home from dropping Caitlin off; went to Hansel and Gretel and PO
* tutoring with Dennis 6-7pm
* learning “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” on the keyboard
* computer chess
* she and Caitlin had tried to find freecycle.com and come up with a squatter site, so I told her about trying .org, then found the email list and tried to explain how it works – she wants to find a smaller bookcase

061202-03 Saturday-Sunday

* “Christmas” lunch with Nannie, Pa, Grandmoogi, Granda and Anne @ King Fook’s
* went out with E to buy microwave and walk around new Canberra Centre; bought new phone cover for B and puch for E
* Scout sleepover from 4pm

* picked up B at 9am, she and I went out for breakfast at the mall then did some Christmas shopping
* went to Baronial Day with E and K
* noodled about (we can’t remember any details)
